History of the Mountain View Open

The 2020 Mountain View Open would have been the 52nd edition of this annual tournament. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have to cancel the tournament for the first time since 1998. We hope to continue the Mountain View Open in 2021. For the first 28 editions, from 1965 to 1992, the Mountain View Open was sponsored by the Mountain View Recreation Department and directed by Don Schaefer. Starting in the late 70's, the Mountain View Tennis Club provided major assistance with the many of the behind the scenes tasks. Then in 1993 and 1994, the club took over the responsibility for producing the tournament. From 1995 to 1998, there was a hiatus of 4 years with no Mountain View Open. Then in 1999, the Mountain View Open returned. The Mountain View Open is currently produced by Mountain View Tennis (the operator of Cuesta Tennis Center) with support from local community volunteers and the Mountain View Parks and Recreation Department. The tournament is self supporting. It is a city of Mountain View tradition that provides a Memorial Day weekend sports event that families and tennis fans can enjoy.

The tournament has attracted great players from all over Northern California. Many of the participants are players from the local universities, top juniors, and touring pros. Some of the great players of the past, who played at this tournament and then went on to play at the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, or on the Davis Cup or Federation Cup Teams, have been: Tom Brown, Whitney Reed, Roscoe Tanner, Barry Mackay, Sandy Mayer, Gene Mayer, Nick Saviano, Kate Latham, Ann Kiyomura, Kathy Jordan, Rosie Casals, CiCi Bellis, and Jenson Brooksby.
